Bulldogs Roll Past Visiting UT-Martin

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Sophomore Andrew Chrabascz scored a season-high 17 points and junior Kellen Dunham added 15 to lead Butler to a 64-37 victory over UT-Martin at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Monday, Dec. 22.  The non-conference win snapped Butler's two-game losing skid and lifted the Bulldogs to 9-3 on the season.

Chrabascz, coming off a 14-point performance in Butler's loss to Indiana at the Crossroads Classic, hit seven of eight shots from the field, including a career-best three of four from beyond the three-point arc to lead all scorers in the game.  The 17 points were the second-most of his career, trailing only his 24-point performance against Georgetown a year ago.

Dunham scored 11 of his 15 points in the first half, while helping the Bulldogs to a 31-23 halftime lead.  He reached double-figures in scoring for the 12th time this season.

The two Butler scoring leaders had plenty of help.  Junior Roosevelt Jones scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds, senior Alex Barlow had eight points and three steals, senior Kameron Woods grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and freshman Kelan Martin came off the bench with 10 points in 19 minutes.

"I'm proud of our guys for their effort today," said Butler Coach Chris Holtmann.  "Our older guys were really committed to playing this game the way we wanted it to be played.  They had a look in their eyes that was really good."

UT-Martin (7-4), playing its ninth true road game this season, scored the first four points of the game, before Butler responded with 11 unanswered points.  Jones started the run with five consecutive points, before Dunham scored four straight.  Barlow closed the run with a lay-up, and the Bulldogs never looked back.

Dunham gave Butler its biggest lead of the first half, 29-16, with his only three-point field goal of the game, but the Skyhawks trimmed that margin to eight by halftime.

The second half was all Butler.  The Bulldogs opened the final period with a 20-5 run to push the lead over 20 points, and the Skyhawks never got closer than 18 points the rest of the game.

Butler held UT-Martin to just 14 points in the final 20 minutes and just 33% shooting for the game.  The Skyhawks entered the game shooting 38.3% from beyond the three-point arc, but manged just two of 13 (15.4%) long shots against Butler.  The 37 points were a season-low for the Tennessee squad.

"Our defense was really sound for the bulk of the game," noted Holtmann. "In a lot of ways, we made it difficult for them."

The Bulldogs, who had dropped back-to-back games at Tennessee and to Indiana, hit 14 of 25 (56%) shot after intermission and wound up shooting 49% (25-51) for the game.  Butler out-rebounded the visitors, 39-20.

Butler will take a brief Christmas break before returning to Hinkle Fieldhouse to host Belmont on Sunday, Dec. 28.  That final non-conference contest is slated for 6 p.m. (ET).
