INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - It was just another day at the office for the Butler track and field teams this weekend as the Bulldogs returned from a pair of meets with a handful of personal bests and multiple school records.
At the Iowa State Cyclone Classic, an elite meet, cross country All-American and junior Mara Olson broke the Butler record in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:03.89 in the event. She was third behind Juliet Bottorff of Duke (15:49.80) and Sara Sutherland of Texas (16:03.89).
Junior Katie Good also ran a personal record, recording a 9:39.78 in the 3000 meter run (15th). Senior Alex Berry continued his assault on the Butler record book with a strong performance in the 400 meter dash. He clocked 48.34, good for second place in his section five and fourth overall.
The men's distance medley relay of Berry, senior Tom Anderson, junior Tom Curr, and freshman Erik Peterson placed third at the Classic, clocking 9:37.35 for another school record. Curr clocked an unofficial four-minute mile in the event.
Peterson also raced to a personal best 8:08.24 in the 3000 meter run, winning section two of the event and placing third overall. Anderson took eleventh in 8:12.95.
Back in Indiana, the Bulldogs had several strong performances at the Fred Wilt Boilermaker Invitational. Senior Dominique Stephens broke the school record in the weight throw with a toss of 15.35m, while finishing ninth. Sophomore Chris Kelsey placed sixth in the men's mile in 4:24.69, while senior Nigel Spears and freshman Emery Barnes were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump, with leaps of 6.60m and 6.05m.
In the women's competition, junior Amy Wright took sixth in the 600 m run with a time of 1:40.39, while senior Shelbi Burnett was ninth in 800 meter run, clocking 2:18.59.
The Bulldogs' next appearance will be at the Big East Championships in New York, set to kickoff at the Armory on Friday, Feb. 21.
