BU Swimming Continues to Improve at BIG EAST Championships

SEWELL, N.J. - Day two of the 2014 BIG EAST Swimming Championships wrapped up Thursday night with the Bulldogs setting even more school records. Events taking place on Thursday included the 500 Free Prelims, 200 IM, 50 Free, and the 200 Free Relay.

Three Butler swimmers recorded lifetime-best results in the 500 Free Prelims. Sarah Gibbons was the top BU finisher as she touched the wall at 5:15.76. Abby Cutler finished the prelims at 5:22.77 and Cecilia Rose was behind at 5:28.27. The fourth Bulldog to compete in the event was Milly Sauber. She posted a season-best time in the 500 Free, clocking in at 5:30.27.

Yet another school record would drop in the 200 IM on Thursday as Emma Green paced the Bulldogs with two impressive times. Green set a new lifetime-best in the prelims with a time of 2:10.31. Her second swim of the day was her best as Green placed 11th overall in the finals with a new school record time of 2:09.51. Also competing in the 200 IM for Butler was Genevieve Pena who posted a season-best time of 2:13.47.

Six different BU student-athletes were active in the 50 free at the championships. Claire Butkus was the top performer as she placed 13th in the finals with a time of 24.64. Her finish placed her fourth on the Butler All-Time Top 10 List.

Kaitie Ring and Helen Heimark posted lifetime-best results in the event posting times of 25.37 and 25.87 respectively. Three season-best finishes were also recorded by Amanda Wagner (25.32), Abby Gibbons (25.47) and Emily McCutchan (25.78).

The 200 Free relay team of Audrey Gosnell, Claire Butkus, Amanda Wagner and Kaitie Ring set a new school record by posting a time of 1:37.41 in the event. Their efforts landed them in fourth place in the competition.

Gosnell got the team off to a great start with a 23.80 split. The time held up as her lifetime-best and would have placed her fourth overall in the 50 free. Butkus would follow Gosnell in the relay with a 24.11 split and the third swimmer to enter the water would be Wagner who posted a 24.81 split. Finishing the race was the senior leader, Ring, who posted a 24.69 split.
