SEWELL, N.J. – Butler performed well at day three of the 2014 BIG EAST Swimming Championships as two more school records were broken in 100 Fly and the 400 Medley Relay. Other events taking place on Friday included the 200 Free, 100 Breast and 100 Back.
"Today was our best team performance of the meet so far," Head Coach Maurice Stewart said. "It was great to have seven individual swimmers qualify for finals, and to see the entire team get behind each final swimmer with high spirit and encouragement. It was a really exciting finals session for Butler Swimming. I am very proud of the individual and relay performances tonight."
Audrey Gosnell set a new school record in the 100 Fly with a time of 56.96. She won the B-Final race to finish ninth overall. Maggie Wright and Allie Dvorchak also competed in the 100 Fly for Butler. Both Wright and Dvorchak recorded season-best times with Wright finishing at 1:01.23 and Dvorchak touching the wall at 1:02.74.
The second school record to fall on Friday came in the 400 Medley Relay. The team of Kaitie Ring, Amanda Wagner, Gosnell and Emma Green placed sixth overall with a time of 3:55.25. Ring got the team off to a great start by setting a new school record in the back lead-off with a time of 58.53. Wagner followed with a breast split time of 1:06.71 and then the action turned to Gosnell who swam a 57.06 split in the Fly. The final leg of the race featured Green swimming a 52.95 split in the Free.
Two Bulldogs reached the finals in the 200 Free. Claire Butkus placed 12th with a season-best time of 1:56.61 and teammate Sarah Gibbons was close behind in 14th with a lifetime-best effort of 1:56.88. Abby Gibbons and Catie Weichelt were also active in the event with Abby Gibbons posting a lifetime-best result of 2:00.39 and Weichelt at 2:01.72, a season-best time.
Amanda Wagner barely missed a school record to pace the Bulldogs in the 100 Breast on Friday. She placed fifth, missing the school record by just .02 with a lifetime-best performance of 1:05.54. Mary Cerajewski also set a lifetime-best in the prelims finishing at 1:09.58 in the prelims She ended the meet by placing 16th in Finals (1:10.76).
Butler had two competitors finish back-to-back in the 100 Back Finals with Ring and Green posting lifetime-best results. Ring took 10th place with a time of 58.62 and Green was close behind in 11th at 58.64. Rounding out the effort was Helen Heimark, Emily McCutchan and Cecilia Rose. Heimark placed 21st (1:01.45), McCutchan was 24th (1:01.88) and Rose finished at 26th (1:02.28).
