The Butler track and field teams had a record-breaking weekend at the 27th annual Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The two-day meet concluded on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The invite, which brought more than thirty teams together this year, was held at the Meyo Track in Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center. Over the course of the meet, Butler school records in the 1600m relay, triple jump, 500m run, and 60m were broken and a handful of personal bests were set.
Junior Nicole Hudec and senior Alex Berry lead the way, breaking two records each.
"Great meet overall for the group," said head coach Matt Roe. And "Berry and Hudec were excellent. The better the competition, the better they have performed thus far this season."
Hudec broke her own record in the 60m dash, clocking 7.88, and the triple jump, with a mark of 11.68m. Hudec took 30th in the preliminary round of the 60m dash and 13th overall in the triple jump.
Berry ran a 1:03.62 in the 500m to also smash his own school record, finishing in 3rd place. The men's 1600m relay of Berry, seniors Matt Schumacker, Nigel Spears, and Andrew Wallace ran the fastest time in school history - indoor or outdoor - clocking 3:16.69 to win section one of the race.
"(Berry and Hudec) have helped show our sprints/ jumps group what is possible with consistent training and competitive mentality," Roe said. "The men's 4x400 relay was a great milestone for our program. To set a school record and win a section at the Meyo is new and exciting territory."
Spears, junior Erica Carlson, junior James Martin and Alex Van Hoof were just a few who also set personal records in the long jump 5000m runs. Spears had a leap of 6.82 meters in the long jump and Carlson clocked just over 2:19 for 54th in the 800m run, while Martin and freshman Van Hoof ran 14:28.10 (10th) and 17:38.36 (24th), respectively.
Junior Tom Curr took 7th in the legendary men's Meyo mile in 4:03.99. Senior Shelbi Burnett clocked 10:04.21 in the women's 3000m run, just missing top ten honors with an 11th place.
Butler's next meets are the Iowa State Track Classic and the Boilermaker Invite, to be held in Ames, Iowa and West Lafayette, Ind. next weekend.
