Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Butler took an 11-2 setback to Western Illinois on Friday afternoon as the Leathernecks scored nine runs in the final four innings of the game. Michael Fries and Marco Caponi each recorded two hits for Butler, but the 'Dogs were limited to just six in their 13th loss of the year.
Two sacrifice flies gave Western Illinois a 2-0 edge and a two-run shot over the fence in left center moved the deficit to 4-0.
Butler got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with an RBI from Dan Busch that allowed Caponi to score.
The Leathernecks responded with four runs off three hits in the seventh and the game was put out of reach in the eighth as WIU posted three runs off three more hits.
Butler loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but they were only able to score one run as Pat Guinane became the third batter to be hit by a pitch in the inning. A strikeout followed the run and the game would come to an end with a double play.
Eric Stout moved to 1-5 on the year with the loss on the hill for BU. Will Schierholz and Jacob Dzubay each threw an inning to finish off the day.
These two clubs will meet again in a doubleheader on Sunday.
