Box Score QUEENS – A six-run fourth inning allowed St. John's to defeat Butler on Sunday afternoon as Bret Dennis belted a grand slam over the wall to break a 2-2 tie. Butler attempted a comeback with four runs in the top of the sixth inning highlighted by an RBI single from Ryan Wojciechowski, but the offensive production wasn't enough as St. John's completed the series sweep with a 9-7 win.
Wojciechowski and Quincy Quintero each recorded a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 from the plate. Wojciechowski led the team with three RBIs while Quintero scored a team-high three runs against STJ.
Bret Dennis and Matt Harris were the difference makers for the Red Storm. Each student athlete homered on Sunday allowing Dennis to lead the team with five RBIs. Harris matched Wojciechowski's effort with two hits and three RBIs for the home team.
Eric Stout was hit with the loss while Chris Kalica earned his fifth win of the year. Stout pitched four full innings and ended the game with three strikeouts. Six of his eight runs were earned as the Red Storm scattered eight hits through the diamond vs. Stout.
Will Schierholz and Billy Laing each logged two innings of action for Butler to finish the game. Schierholz was lights out, striking out two batters and only allowing one hit in his two innings. Laing held St. John's without a hit, but four walked batters allowed STJ to tag on one run late in the game.
After facing a one-run deficit, Butler came up with two runs in the top of the second inning off a two-RBI double to left center from Wojciechowski. The game would eventually be knotted up at 2-2 with a Dennis RBI single back up the middle of the field.
The deciding factor on Sunday came on a 3-1 pitch in the fourth inning as Dennis waited for his pitch and blasted a grand slam over the left field wall. Harris also homered in the inning giving the Red Storm some breathing room.
Butler wouldn't go down without a fight as Wojciechowski singled through the left side to score Quintero. Nick Bartolone followed in the order after a St. John's pitching change to deliver a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
The St. John's bullpen was shaky in the sixth as Chris Maranto and Michael Fries each drew bases loaded walks to chip away at the deficit. The 'Dogs final run of the game would be unearned as Wojciechowski reached on an error and Quintero came home to make the score 8-7.
St. John's would add one more insurance run and Joe Kuzia would do the rest as the STJ closer came in to record his sixth save of the season by tossing the final two innings of the game. Kuzia only allowed one hit while striking out two.
Butler moved to 14-20 overall with the loss, moving their BIG EAST record to 2-4. St. John's will now be near the top of the conference standings with a 4-2 BIG EAST record. They reached their 20th win of the season on Sunday vs. BU.
Butler's next game will be played on Tuesday, April 15 at Purdue. First pitch against the Boilermakers is slated for 3 p.m. BIG EAST action will return to Bulldog Park this weekend as BU hosts Xavier for a three-game series beginning Thursday, April 17.
