FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Butler women's tennis team has been eliminated from the 2014 BIG EAST Championships after falling 5-0 to No. 2 seed Marquette on Friday morning. The Bulldogs will now wrap up the 2014 season with a consolation match vs. No. 6 Seton Hall tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Butler came into the weekend with nothing to lose at the No. 10 seed. The team played some of their best tennis of the season to upset the No. 7 seed Creighton in the opening round of competition, but they were unable to repeat on Friday as the team falls to 5-17 on the year.
The doubles point on Friday went to Marquette as the Golden Eagles picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1 followed by an 8-5 win at No. 2. Kailey Eaton and Stephanie McLoughlin represented the Bulldogs at the top spot while Grace Hyde and Angelina Qin were hit with the loss playing at No. 2.
Every singles match went down in straight-sets as Marquette earned a 5-0 victory. Vanessa Foltinger won the first game 6-0, 6-0 over Hyde and Ana Pimienta took down McLoughlin at No. 1 6-2, 6-0.
Wrapping up the action was Rocio Diaz defeating Jocelyn Koester at No. 6 and Aina Herenandez Soler knocking off Eaton at No. 4.
