Second Half Goal Leads to 1-0 Loss to Miami

Box Score

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Bulldogs recorded more overall shots, shots on goal, and corner kicks, but they were unable to get on the scoreboard as Miami OH recorded a 1-0 victory to win the 2014 Boilermaker Challenge Cup on Sunday.

Butler moves to 1-1 on the year with the 1-0 setback. They outshot Miami OH 15-8, including three shots on goal to just two for the Redhawks. The final count on corner kicks was six to three in favor of Butler.

The difference maker came in the 77th minute of action as Kat Zalar scored the lone goal of the game after a Butler miscue. A misplayed ball was collected by Zalar nearly 15 yards out. Her shot beat the keeper just inside the left post.

Freshman goalkeeper Madison Card made one save in her second career start of her young career. Danielle Wiseman was credited with the shutout for Miami as she stopped all three shots on goal. Miami officially won the 2014 Boilermaker Challenge Cup with the victory as they also defeated Purdue by the final score of 1-0 on Friday.

"We were pretty good today, but credit Miami, we couldn't break them," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said. "They were incredibly opportunistic on what was one of their only two shots on goal. It's unfortunate that we created that chance for them, but I have no doubt that we will respond in a positive way as we head into training and into our next round of games."

Butler had two quality looks to score against Miami (OH), but Wiseman would stand up to the challenge to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. Ashley Weaver fired a shot from 18 yards away from the left flank which forced Wiseman to make a nice above the head save on the left side.

Butler's other scoring chance came at the 61:56 mark on a nice set piece from Stephanie Kaylor. Wiseman put herself in a good position to punch the ball away to keep the game scoreless.

Butler will return to practice this week in preparation for a test at No. 13 Nebraska on Friday, Aug. 29. The match against the Cornhuskers will get underway at 6:30.
