Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. – A late unassisted goal in the 83rd minute of action separated Nebraska and Butler on Friday night as the Cornhuskers improved to 2-1 on the young season. With the loss, Butler falls to 1-2 overall.
"You can see why they [Nebraska] are the reigning Big Ten Champions," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John explained. "They are athletic, but also play with sophistication. With that being said, I was proud of our team's effort and discipline to the game plan. It took a misplayed cross to beat us tonight."
Butler played very well defensively to keep within striking distance of Nebraska. Jayne Heinrich stepped in as the starting goalkeeper and came away with a career-high seven saves. The back line in general was on their toes as Butler was also credited with two team saves.
"Jayne was great," St. John added. "She should gain confidence from this performance. Saving a penalty kick on this stage and keeping our team in the game for 90 minutes… that's not a bad first collegiate game."
Elise Kotsakis and Brenna Pawelkowski each took a shot on goal for the Bulldogs, but the ball control was dominated by Nebraska as they took 17 total shots, 10 of which were shots on goal.
Caroline Flynn scored the game-winning goal and Kelly Schatz picked up the shutout after making two saves.
The Bulldogs will return to action with a match at Iowa on Monday, Sept. 1. Action begins at 2 p.m.
