Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Sophia Maccagnone scored her first goal of the season to give Butler a 1-0 victory over Indiana State on Thursday night. The Bulldogs have now won back-to-back matches, improving their overall record to 3-4.
Time of possession heavily favored Butler on Thursday and a late second half goal in the 74th minute would eventually separate the two teams as Butler notched a win for the second time at the Butler Bowl.
Maccagnone took a beautiful pass from Elise Kotsakis to score the game-winner. Kotsakis took the initial pass from Paige Johnson on the left side of the field to get the scoring chance started. A cross back to the middle of the field put the ball at Maccagnone's feet and she was able to beat the keeper to the left side to put Butler out in front.
Butler recorded 21 total shots taking 10 in the first stanza and 11 in the second. The high powered offense paired with stellar team defense limited the Sycamores to just six total shots.
Corner kicks were also in Butler's favor as the Bulldogs took six attempts compared to just two from the visitors. The BU offense kept Brittany San Roman very active as the Indiana State goalkeeper finished the match with 10 saves.
"We started a bit slow tonight, but came out flying in the second half," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John explained. "We moved the ball well in all areas of the field tonight, especially in the final third. It would have been nice to get a couple of more goals, but you have to give credit to ISU's goalkeeper. She made some fantastic saves."
Jayne Heinrich would once again take the starting role at goalie for the Bulldogs. She made two stops to improve to 2-3 on the year.
The Bulldogs will return to action with a 1 p.m. match vs. cross-town rival IUPUI on Sunday, Sept. 14.
