Late Goal Sinks Bulldogs At Western Michigan

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, MICH. - A fortunate bounce in the 83rd minute helped lift host Western Michigan to a 2-1 victory over Butler in a non-conference match on Friday, Sept. 12.  The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 2-2-2 on the season.

The game-winning sequence for the Broncos started with a corner kick by Sean Conerty and a shot by Brandon Bye.  Butler goalkeeper Eric Dick stopped the scoring attempt, but the ball bounced to WMU's Zach Bock who fired a shot to the back of the net.  It was his second goal of the night.

"Their style of play was to play it long, and they capitalized on their set pieces.  They put it in our box, and they just reacted quicker to it," said Butler head coach Paul Snape of the game-winner.

The late score broke a 1-1 deadlock and ended a scoreless second half.  The Broncos (2-2-1) took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a header by Bock at 27:09.  But the Bulldogs answered just four minutes later on a goal by sophomore David Goldsmith, his third of the season.  Junior Caleb Postlewait picked up an assist on the goal.

"It was nice to respond so quickly after (Western Michigan) scored," stated Snape.  "It was a good goal from David.  I always thought we could score tonight and we had a plan to get the ball into our strikers and find the space.  But we didn't get back in our rhythm in the second half."

"Give credit to Western Michigan.  They did a good job of bringing the game to us and it turned in their favor," added the Butler coach.

Western Michigan held a narrow 8-7 advantage in shots at halftime, before out-shooting the Bulldogs, 8-4, in the final period.  The Broncos had four shots on goal in the second half and six shots on goal for the match.

Junior Jeff Adkins led the Bulldogs with three shots, including one on goal, while Goldsmith added a pair of shots on goal.  Butler goalkeeper Eric Dick finished with four saves.

The road doesn't get easier for the Bulldogs.  Butler will visit No. 11 Indiana on Wednesday, Sept. 17, for a non-conference contest.  That match in Bloomington is slated for 7:30 p.m.
