Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Freshman Shannon McDevitt scored off a header with just 0:47 left to lift Butler to a 2-1 victory over visiting IUPUI in a non-conference match at the Butler Bowl on Sunday (Sept. 14). The dramatic goal boosted the Bulldogs to 4-4 on the season.
McDevitt's goal off a corner kick by teammate Maria Collica came just minutes after the Jaguars had tied the match on a goal by Krissy Kirkhoff. With the clock ticking down, the match appeared to be headed for overtime, when McDevitt emerged from a crowd in front of the goal and slipped a shot past IUPUI goalkeeper Catherine Schmidt.
The goal was McDevitt's second of the season, and her second game-winner. And it came on her only shot in the match!
"What a fantastic response to IUPUI's late goal," said Butler Co-Head Coach Tari St. John. "It's always a good sign when you can have two freshmen step up in a big moment like Shann and Maria did today."
For more than 85 minutes, the Bulldogs appeared to be comfortably in control of the contest. Sophomore Serina Kashimoto gave Butler a 1-0 lead less than four minutes into that match with her first goal of the season. She took a pass from junior Sophia Maccagnone on the left side of the net and fired a shot to the right corner of the net.
That lead stood until 83:38 when Kirkhoff found an opening in front of the net.
Butler unleashed a relentless attack throughout the match. The Bulldogs created numerous opportunities and kept the pressure on IUPUI goalkeepers Nicole Kulovitz and Schmidt, who combined for 10 saves. One of those saves came on a penalty kick by senior Elise Kotsakis in the 36th minute.
The Bulldogs out-shot IUPUI, 23-6, and the home team had a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. Butler finished with 11 corner kicks to none for the Jaguars.
"For as exciting as a game it turned out to be, we would have rather put our chances away early," St. John added. Eleven corners and a PK should give you enough set pieces to score multiple goals, not to mention the numerous opportunities during the run of play. But you have to give IUPUI credit, they hung around and seized an opportunity to tie the game late forcing us to make an even later heroic finish."
Maccagnone led Butler's attack with five shots, including two on goal, while Kotsakis and sophomore McKenzie Muchow each added four attempts. Kashimoto, Kotsakis and freshman Brenna Pawelkowski each had two shots on goal.
Sophomore Jayne Heinrich went the distance in goal for the Bulldogs and recorded her third win in six decisions. She finished with three saves, two of which came in the second half.
The Bulldogs will be on the road for a match at Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, Sept. 17, before returning to the Butler Bowl to host Bowling Green on Friday, Sept. 19. The match against Bowling Green has been designated Butler Bulldogs Soccer Camp Day and will start at 7 p.m.
