Box Score HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – A late goal from Elise Kotsakis with just three seconds remaining on the game clock pushed the match to overtime on Wednesday night and a second goal from the senior forward would give the Bulldogs their fourth-straight win.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start by taking just one shot in the opening 45 minutes of play. The tempo would pick up for BU in the final 45 minutes as the Butler out-shot the Norse 11-4 to tie the game.
"Tonight was a really hard fought game that required a huge emotional and physical effort from our team," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said. "NKU did a great job defensively and really made it tough for us to create many quality chances out of our sustained possession. This definitely tested our patience and I think provided a good test for our group."
Northern Kentucky scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick as Sami Rutowski found the back of the net for the third time this season. Rutowski was assisted by Jaclyn Elmore who took the corner kick and teammate Kelsey Laumann.
The 1-0 deficit would come down to the wire as Butler clawed their way back into the match with the late score from Kotsakis. Kelly Mahoney pushed the ball up to Sophia Maccagnone who was also credited with an assist. The timing for Kotsakis' fifth goal of the season could not have been better as she beat the keeper with less than five seconds to play in the second half.
The game-winner turned out to be a quick strike by Kotsakis in the first overtime period as her sixth goal of the season beat the keeper off the left post. Serina Kashimoto was credited with the assist which helped Butler improve to 5-4 on the season.
"Our energy, enthusiasm and intensity in the second half was tremendous," St. John added. "A huge part of this came from our bench and this really was a terrific full squad effort to grind out a road win. This experience should serve us well as we move towards more tough road games in conference play."
Corner kicks were tight in the first half with Butler taking five compared to four from Northern Kentucky. The second half surge would separate the two teams as Butler ended the match with 11 compared to the Norse ending competition with only four.
Jayne Heinrich earned the win in-between the pipes for Butler. She made five stops in just under 92 minutes of playing time. The loss would land on Brooke Schocker who made four stops for the Norse.
Butler will play their final non-conference home match of the season this Friday when they host Bowling Green for a night match beginning at 7 p.m.
