2014 Fall Invite Draws
INDIANAPOLIS - The Butler men's tennis team will travel up I-65 this weekend to West Lafayette for the Fifth Annual Purdue Fall Invitational. Action will start at 9 a.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. each day after that at the Schwartz Tennis Center and Cumberland Tennis Courts.
The three-day tournament begins Friday with 20 teams scheduled to compete. The tournament field will include Case Western Reserve, Chicago, Chicago State, Cleveland State, DePaul, Eastern Kentucky, Green Bay, Iowa, IUPUI, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Tennessee Tech, Toledo, Valparaiso, Vincennes, and Western Michigan.
One round of singles and two rounds of doubles are slated for Friday, followed by two rounds of singles and one round of doubles on Saturday. Finals for each flight in doubles and singles will be contested on Sunday. Matches will be played on a dozen outdoor and six indoor courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center, while six outdoor courts are available at Cumberland Tennis Courts.
Six flights of singles competition will use the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recommended NCAA singles format and three flights of doubles will play an eight game pro-set with no-add scoring. The Sept. 8 ITA rankings, followed by the Universal Tennis Rating (UTR), will be used for seeding the draws.
The Bulldogs kicked off their fall season last weekend at the River Forest Invite in River Forest, Ill. with excellent showings in doubles by Tommy Marx and Alex Woldmoe, who were crowned champions in Flight B Doubles, and by Austin Woldmoe and Brandon Woods who took first place in Flight C Doubles.
In singles play, teammates Austin Woldmoe and Billy Weldon met in the third place match of Flight C Singles with Woldmoe coming out on top to finish third in the tournament.
Memphis's Connor Glennon is the highest ranked player in men's singles at No. 38 in the Sept. 8 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. The Boilermakers' Ricky Medinilla and Diego Acosta are the field's top ranked doubles pair at No. 41 in the ITA rankings.
