Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's soccer team was unable to extend their five match winning streak on Thursday night as they fell to Villanova in the BIG EAST home opener by the final score of 1-0.
"Simply a wasted opportunity tonight," Co-Head Coach Rob Alman stated after the match. "A dominant performance, but we came up with nothing to show for it. We missed a penalty kick, hit the post, and created other chances, but in the end we were too wasteful."
Villanova was able to capitalize off its only shot on goal in the match when Christin Camass scored in the 69th minute for the Wildcats. Caitlin Forte and Victoria Gersh were each credited with an assist on the play.
The Bulldogs outshot Villanova 11-3 and held the advantage in shots on goal with three to one. Corner kicks were also lopsided as Butler took six compared to just one from Nova.
The first scoring chance of the night for Butler came 22 minutes into the match when Sophia Maccagnone laid out a timely pass to McKenzie Muchow who fired a shot that ricocheted off the left post. The shot was one of just four in the opening half for the Bulldogs, but the stingy BU defense limited the opposition to just one.
Muchow stayed active for Butler in the second half as she fired two shots on goal at Villanova early in the period. Each shot was saved by Emma Meyer who ended the match with three total saves.
The game-winner from Camassa would follow Muchow's back-to-back shots on goal. Camassa took a pass from the middle of the field and beat the keeper to the top left corner. It was her first goal of the season for Villanova.
Just four minutes after the score, Butler was put in a position to tie the contest after a careless foul in the box from Villanova which set up Maccagnone for a penalty kick. Maccagnone's shot went right but Meyer was able to knock it down with a one-handed save to deny Butler. The Bulldogs were awarded a corner kick following the missed opportunity but the attempt went high and out of play behind the goal.
"The competitive drive our team showed tonight was great and if we keep playing like that we will enjoy some success this season," Alman added.
Thursday night's setback was the first home loss of the season for Butler as the team entered the contest 4-0 at home and in the midst of a five-match winning streak. The Bulldogs will try to start a new streak on Sunday as they host Seton Hall for a 1 p.m. start.
