Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - Forward Brandon Allen scored a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes of the match to lift #11 Georgetown to a 2-0 victory over host Butler in a BIG EAST Conference match on Saturday, Sept. 27. The setback in Butler's BIG EAST opener at the Butler Bowl dropped the Bulldogs to 4-3-3 on the season.
Allen, the leading scorer in the BIG EAST, broke a scoreless deadlock with a penalty kick at 78:39. He then added an insurance goal from 10 yards out with less than two minutes remaining to seal the decision for the league-leading Hoyas (5-1-3, 2-0 BIG EAST).
"They're one of the top teams in the country and you could see that they're consistent in wearing you down and looking for openings," said Butler head coach Paul Snape of his nationally-ranked opponent. "The second half I thought they just wore us down, and we looked a little tired."
The Hoyas were relentless in their attack. They launched 12 shots in the first half, including three on goal, and then added nine more attempts, including six shots on goal, in the final period. Forward Alex Muyl, who had an assist on Allen's second goal, led the way with seven shots, matching the entire team total for Butler.
Butler's defense withstood that assault for more than three-quatrers of the contest. The Bulldogs' back line blocked numerous attempts, and goalkeeper Andy Holte recorded a career-high seven saves, including several at point-blank range.
"Anytime you go 0-0 into the final minutes of a match with Georgetown, it's great," stated Snape of his team's defensive performance. "You're one opportunity, one goal away from winning it."
Vincent Mitchell led Butler with two shots, and he had one of the Bulldogs' two shots on goal. Senior Brandon Fricke had the other. Butler's remaining shots came from Jeff Adkins, Joey Bastian, David Goldsmith and Mike Kozielek.
The BIG EAST road doesn't get easier for the Bulldogs. Butler will play its next two conference matches on the road, beginning with a trip to New York to face St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 4. That contest will be followed by a trip to #12 Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 11.
"We're going to have to regroup and get ready for the St. John's match next week," added Snape.
