Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler women's soccer team defeated Seton Hall by the final score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon to earn their first BIG EAST victory of the season. Sophia Maccagnone gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the half while Kelly Mahoney and Hannah Farley added goals in the second stanza to ice the win.
"The team put in a very good performance today," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said. "We were sharp in possession, won the physical battle at midfield, and scored three quality goals against a team that doesn't give up many."
Maccagnone was the first Bulldog to find the back of the net vs. Seton Hall on Sunday as she blasted a shot from the middle of the field to give Butler the advantage. Maccagnone scored just over 18 minutes into the contest off a double assist from Shannon McDevitt and Annie Weber.
Less than five minutes into the second half it was Kelly Mahoney scoring a beautiful goal off yet another double assist, giving Butler a two goal edge. McKenzie Muchow got the play started by finding Stephanie Kaylor on the wide side of the field. Kaylor placed the ball back into the middle of the field where Mahoney was streaking towards the goal. The pass was right on target as Mahoney used her head to score her third goal of the season. She beat the keeper to the left side, giving the Bulldogs an insurance goal.
The third and final goal of the match for Butler was scored by Hannah Farley off a nice assist from Maccagnone. Farley took the shot from the near side of the field and beat the keeper to the right post. She now has two goals during the 2014 season.
While the Butler offense did their part with three goals, it was a total team effort defensively to earn the shutout win as Butler shut down the Pirate attack.
"Jayne [Heinrich] and our center backs did very well organizing the defense," St. John added. "We were able to limit an athletic team to just one shot on the day."
The lone shot from Seton Hall came in the second half after a Pirate corner kick. The ball sailed to the far side of the field where Kristina Meier was waiting. Meier fired a shot at Heinrich, but the BU goalkeeper was in position to make the save.
The total shot count favored Butler as the Bulldogs took six in the first half combined with five in the second, ending the game with 11. Corner kicks were even at 2-2.
Jayne Heinrich was credited with the win as the BU goalkeeper. She is now 6-4-0 on the year.
