Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Butler volleyball team earned their first conference win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Georgetown Sunday afternoon (24-26, 28-26, 25-19, 25-22). The Bulldogs hit .290 on the day, posting attack percentages over .300 in the final three sets.
"I'm so pleased that we won today," Head Coach Sharon Clark said. "This team has fought through road matches for five consecutive weeks. They are extremely fatigued, but we were still able to pull out another great win."
Stephanie Kranda was nearly unstoppable against the Hoyas as the senior posted 19 kills with just three errors to earn a .421 attack percentage. She added five blocks and five digs in the contest.
"I can't say enough about our senior leadership who got it done on the court today," Clark added. "[Stephanie] Kranda was an offensive threat all match and Erica [Stahl] showed up in a big way, sparking us with tremendous blocking. I also thought that Jadyn [Yarling] and Brooke [Ruffolo] played smothering defense."
Belle Obert and Kayla Bivins joined Kranda with double figure kill counts. Obert went for 16 kills, eight digs and two blocks. Bivins was in the box score with 10 kills and three blocks.
Action at the net was controlled by Erica Stahl on Sunday who finished the match with a team-high 10 blocks. The middle blocker was all over the court on Sunday with nine kills, seven digs and three assists.
Freshman Makayla Ferguson was yet another Bulldog that contributed to the win as she came up with a double-double after posting 52 assists and 11 digs. The team dig leader was Jadyn Yarling who tallied a career-high 27 against the Hoyas. Brooke Ruffolo was also impressive from a defensive standpoint ending the match with a season-high 19 digs.
The Bulldogs dropped the first set of the day 26-24 and then went into extra points to even the match at 1-1. Butler held a 24-23 lead in the first set after a kill from Stahl, but Georgetown rattled off three-straight points to grab the early advantage. Alex Johnson was credited with back-to-back kills to give the Hoyas momentum.
Set two featured more back and forth action as the teams headed into crunch time knotted at 26-26. Kranda got the team to set-point and Obert finished the Hoyas with the game-winning kill just moments later.
Set three featured Butler jumping out to an 18-11 lead, but Georgetown never gave up as they moved within two points at 21-19. That scoring run was impressive, but it wasn't enough as Butler countered with three-straight points to earn the win.
The fourth and final set was more back and forth action, but the high level of play from Obert was enough for Butler to record the 3-1 win. Obert recorded back-to-back kills to reach match point and Bivins finished the Hoyas with a kill off a Ferguson assist.
"I'm proud of this group for getting through this tough stretch," Clark stated. "It will be nice to play in front of our hometown crowd for this first time in Indy. Playing in front of our fans is great!"
The Bulldogs will return to action with a home match at Shortridge H.S. next Friday, Oct. 3. The match will begin at 6 p.m.
