Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Building off of a strong weekend, the Butler Men's Soccer team enjoyed an exciting start to its home schedule with a 1-0 victory over local opponent IUPUI at the Butler Bowl on Wednesday (Sept. 3). The win brings the Bulldogs to an impressive 2-0-1 on the season.
Sophomore forward David Goldsmith picked up the only goal of the game in the 24th minute, connecting off of a pass from senior midfielder Zach Steinberger to find the left side of the net. The game-winning goal marked the second time this season that Steinberger has assisted on a goal from Goldsmith.
The Jaguars (0-2) enjoyed a strong performance from sophomore goalie Christian Lomeli, who finished the night with seven saves, including an impressive block on an attempt from Butler junior forward Jeff Adkins at the game's 61-minute mark. Adkins, who has two goals on the season, finished the match with four shots.
The Bulldog defense held IUPUI to just six shots and two corners on the night, and redshirt-freshman goalie Eric Dick earned his second career shut-out in just three starts.
"That's something we've been working on," Butler head coach Paul Snape said. "Brandon Fricke does just a fantastic job back there, he's rock solid. The boys know how important it is to keep them out of that back third."
The Bulldogs assaulted the Jaguar net throughout both halves, finishing with 15 shots (8 on-goal) and ten corner attempts. Seven different Butler players attempted shots, making the most of the opportunities created by the team's strong defensive effort.
"We can score in multiple ways," Snape added. "Tonight, Goldsmith got the winner and that was great because we know he's a goal scorer, but we've got a few others who can chip in. The key today was having that great balance between defense and attack, and I think we're getting there."
The Bulldogs will hit the road this weekend to take on SIU-Edwardsville. The match will take place on Saturday, September 6, beginning at 7 p.m.
