Bulldogs Capture Overtime Victory At Marquette

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – Andrew Chrabascz scored a career-high 30 points and Butler pulled out a 72-68 victory in overtime against Marquette at the BMO Bradley Center on Saturday (Jan. 31).  The win was Butler's third straight and lifted the Bulldogs to 16-6 on the season and 6-3 in the BIG EAST.

Chrabascz, who also had a career-high eight rebounds in the game, scored seven points in the final four minutes of regulation to help Butler overcome a 10-point deficit and force the overtime period.  He then scored six of Butler's first eight points in the extra session to give the Bulldogs the lead for good.

"He really answered the bell when we needed scores," said Butler head coach Chris Holtman of his sophomore forward.  "I thought he really played within himself and within our system.  And he really battled on defense, and I was proud of him for that."

Chrabascz wound up hitting 11 of 17 shots in the game and all seven of his free throw attempts.  He became the first Butler player to score 30 points in a game this season, but he was hardly a one-man show.

Junior Kellen Dunham finished with 17 points, including several key baskets in the closing minutes of regulation and in the overtime period.  Senior Alex Barlow chipped in with 15 points and a game-high seven assists, while senior Kameron Woods pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds to lead both teams.

"This was a great team win," said Holtmann.  "We expected the game to be physical and hard-fought and it was all of that.  But our guys stayed tough, fought through some adversity and came up with big plays when we needed them."

The Bulldogs, who never trailed in the first half, faced an uphill climb when Marquette (10-11, 2-7 BIG EAST) took its biggest lead of the game, 55-45, on a pair of free throws and a basket following a technical foul on the Butler bench with just 4:34 left in regulation.

But Chrabascz scored seven points and led Butler on an 8-3 run over the next two minutes to cut Marquette's lead in half.  Barlow then hit a three-point field goal from the right side with 1:20 left to make it a two-point game, 58-56.

A missed shot by Marquette and a rebound by Woods gave the Bulldogs a chance to tie the game, which they did on a jump shot by Dunham (below left) with 27 seconds left. The Bulldogs forced a turnover with five seconds remaining, but a final shot attempt by Roosevelt Jones bounced off the rim.

Duane Wilson gave Marquette the lead 29 seconds into overtime with a short jumper, but Chrabascz quickly tied the game at 60-60.  Dunham then hit another jumper to put the Bulldogs in front for good.  A lay-up by Chrabascz with 1:11 remaining in overtime gave Butler it's biggest lead, 66-61, and the Bulldogs held on by hitting six of six free throw attempts in the final 25 seconds.

Butler hit 17 of 18 free throws in the game, including 11 of 11 after halftime.

Wilson and Matt Carlino led Marquette with 18 points apiece, while 6-11 Luke Fischer and Juan Anderson each added 12.

Butler, led by Woods and Chrabascz, finished with a commanding, 47-33, rebounding advantage.  The Bulldogs pulled down 19 offensive rebounds and out-scored Marquette, 14-6, on second chance points.

The victory gave the Bulldogs three consecutive BIG EAST wins for the first time in their brief tenure in the conference.  It also gave Butler a league-high three conference road wins.

Butler will begin a three-game homestand on Tuesday, Feb. 3, against St. John's.  That game at Hinkle Fieldhouse is slated for 7 p.m. (ET).
