INDIANAPOLIS – The Bulldogs won the doubles point against DePaul on Saturday, but the Blue Demons came back to score four wins in singles competition giving them a narrow 4-3 win in the BIG EAST opener. With the setback, Butler falls to 1-3 early in the indoor season.
The Bulldogs started the day on a high note by winning the doubles point after recording wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The brother tandem of Alex and Austin Woldmoe were the first to finish as they put BU in front with a 6-3 win at No. 3. DePaul knotted the action with a win at No. 2 doubles (6-4), but the point would go to the Bulldogs with Pulok Bhattacharya and Brandon Woods defeating David Vieyra and Jan-Willem Feilzer 7-6 (4).
Austin Woldmoe would be a two-time winner on Saturday as he also won his singles matchup against Vieyra 7-5, 6-1. The other Bulldog to record a win during singles play was Sam O'Neill who defeated Sten Leusink 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
DePaul recorded the first win during singles competition to knot the score at 1-1, but Woldmoe responded with his singles victory to once again give BU the advantage. Butler and DePaul would go on two split the next two finishes with Nathan de Veer winning a three-set match at No. 1 followed by O'Neill taking the point at No. 2.
The turning point of the match came at the end of the lineup as DePaul took wins at No. 5 and 6 singles. Alex Baloustian defeated Bhattacharya 7-5, 6-2 and Jan-Willem Felizer iced the win with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 winner at No. 6.
Butler will begin the month of February with a match at Toledo on Friday, Feb. 6. Their next home match at the Butler Bubble will be played vs. Citadel on Sunday, Feb. 8.
