Bulldogs Make It Two-Straight with Win vs. Creighton

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler ended the weekend on a high note with yet another BIG EAST victory. Just two days after defeating Providence for their first conference win of the year, the Bulldogs returned to Hinkle Fieldhouse to defeat Creighton 63-58 to even their conference record at 2-2.

Loryn Goodwin and Ijeoma Uchendu were exceptional on Sunday as each Bulldog recorded a double-double to lead the team to victory. Goodwin led all scorers with 26 points and was also the top rebounder on either team with 15 boards. Uchendu also surpassed 20 points on the afternoon with 23 points and 13 rebounds against the Bluejays.

With Creighton focused on closing out on 3-point shooters, it was Goodwin and Uchendu attacking the rim for points. Goodwin hit 7-of-9 from the charity stripe and Uchendu was equally as good hitting 7-of-8.

Although Butler never trailed in the second half, free throws down the stretch came up big to hold off the Creighton charge. The Bulldogs ended the game 16-for-23 at the line compared to 8-of-12 from Creighton.

Goodwin and Uchendu combined to score 49 of Butler's 63 total points. The BU scoring total was rounded out with seven points from Lexus Murry, five from Blaire Langlois and two from Belle Obert.

Creighton was led by BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Marissa Janning. The combo guard scored 15 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. The Bluejays also got offensive production out of MC McGrory who ended the game with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

The Bulldogs got off to a slow start when led to Creighton opening up an eight-point lead just four minutes into the contest. After the first media timeout, Butler began to chip away at the lead and would eventually get within one point at the 5:07 mark.

Butler took their first lead of the game after a layup from Obert with 4:23 remaining in the first half and would close the final four minutes of the half on an 8-4 run which gave them a 31-26 lead at the break.

Creighton would get within two points of Butler three different times in the second half, but the Bulldogs would never relinquish the lead on their way to winning their second-straight BIG EAST contest.

BIG EAST play will continue next weekend with Butler traveling to St. John's to face the St. John's Red Storm on Fox Sports 1. Tip-off is slated for Friday, Jan. 9 at 8 p.m.
