Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – The Creighton Bluejays recorded a 3-1 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday night to remain undefeated in conference action (25-14, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17). The Bulldogs won the third set, but were unable to pull off the upset as the team moves to 2-6 in the BIG EAST standings.
Briana Lilly was the top performer for Butler by ending the game with 15 kills and four blocks. Lilly only made three errors on her 27 swings to post a team-high .444 attack percentage.
Makayla Ferguson and Meghan Cotant split the setter role against the Bluejays ending the match with 22 and 16 assists respectively. Ferguson just missed a double-double by adding eight digs.
The Butler dig leader on Friday was libero Aki Aitsebaomo. The sophomore tallied 12 digs to go along with three assists. Yet another Bulldog to impact the match was freshman Anna Logan who recorded eight kills and nine digs.
Leading the charge for the Bluejays was outside hitter Jaali Winters. The four-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week posted a match-high 21 kills and 11 digs to lead Creighton to victory. Lauren Smith added 10 kills and five blocks and setter Maggie Baumert was in the box score with 46 assists and 15 digs.
The first set went to the visitors as Creighton ended the action at 25-14 after a 7-0 scoring run. Butler burned their first timeout facing an 18-13 deficit. Lilly came up with a kill to move the score to 18-14, but that would be the last point of the set for BU as Creighton came up with seven-straight off the Kate Elman serve to grab the 1-0 lead.
Set two came down to the wire when Mary Striedl recorded a kill to get Butler within one at 23-22. Creighton called a late timeout to regroup and again would go on a late scoring run to secure the win 25-22.
Butler would avoid the sweep with a 25-22 win of their own in set three. Lilly and Logan came up huge down the stretch by recording the last three kills of the third. Lilly pushed BU to set point by posting back-to-back kills and Logan sealed the win with a kill off the Ferguson assist.
Momentum would not stay with Butler in set four as Creighton jumped out to an 8-1 lead. The lead would hold for the remainder of the action giving the Bluejays a 25-17 win in the set and the overall 3-1 win in the match.
Butler will return to action tomorrow night with a 6 PM match vs. Georgetown.
