Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Senior midfielder Sophia Maccagnone scored two goals at Creighton on Thursday night to lift Butler to a 2-1 victory in double overtime. With the win, Butler clinches a spot in the upcoming 2015 BIG EAST Championship Tournament.
"What a great road win for the team," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said after the match. "We weren't sharp tonight, especially in front of goal, but we continued to create chances and we kept the pressure on Creighton."
Maccagnone scored the first goal of the match in the opening stages of the second half off a double assist. The Bluejays would respond 10 minutes later with a goal of their own on a successful penalty kick attempt. The 1-1 score would hold to the end of regulation, sending the match into overtime.
The Bulldogs took three shots in the first overtime period, but were unable to break the tie. The third shot in double overtime would be the difference however as Maccagnone notched her seventh goal of the season on the game-winner.
"Sophie put the team on her back tonight," St. John added. "Both goals came off her weaker foot."
Maccagnone's first goal came off a double assist from Paige Monaghan and Halle Stelbasky while her second went down in the box score as unassisted. All four of Maccagnone's shots were on goal tonight with two of the four finding the back of the net.
Butler took 10 shots during the first half, 11 in the second and three in each overtime period to end the contest with 27. Paige Monaghan led all players with eight shots while Serina Kashimoto was second with seven.
Butler took 14 shots on goal compared to just five for the home team. The pressure helped Madison Card pick up the win as the BU goalkeeper. Card made four stops on the night while her counterpart was forced into making 11 saves.
The win over Creighton improves Butler's overall record to 12-5-1, but more importantly it moves the team's conference record to 5-2. Tournament seeding will be finalized next week after Butler hosts a pair of home matches at the Butler Bowl.
Butler will return to action on Sunday with a 1 PM match vs. Marquette. Action can be viewed live on BEDN.
