Box Score INDIANAPOLIS—The Marquette Golden Eagles used a first half goal to defeat Butler on Sunday afternoon 1-0. Darian Powell scored the game-winner in the 32nd minute off a double assist.
The win moves Marquette to 8-6-4 overall and 5-2-1 in the BIG EAST. Butler falls to 12-6-1 which includes a 5-3 conference mark. Each school has already clinched a seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship Tournament.
"Marquette is a powerhouse team, year in and year out," Co-Head Coach Rob Alman stated after the match. "I thought we were poor in the first half, just never really got into a rhythm which is a credit to Marquette. They are a big, strong, physical team and were able to break up the game with 21 fouls."
Marquette was great defensively on Sunday. The Golden Eagles limited Butler to just five shots, four of which came in the second half. Goalkeeper Amanda Engel came up with the shutout win without having to record a save.
Paige Monaghan and Halle Stelbasky shared the team lead in shots taken with two. Senior Sophia Maccagnone was the other Bulldog to take a shot, ending the match with one.
Powell took one of Marquette's two shots on goal against Butler. The second was a close range blast from Emily Mouille. Madison Card responded with a great save to keep Butler within range, but after a final push the Golden Eagle defense was just too much to penetrate.
"The start of the second half was excellent for us," Alman added. "We were much more composed in possession and we were able to play our game a little bit more which is key for us. We created good chances and had some good looks during that time."
The 'Dawgs will return to action with a match against Xavier on Friday, Oct. 30. Senior day festivities will begin moments before opening kick, which is slated for 7 PM.
