Box Score Marist jumped out to an early lead that Butler was unable to overcome as the visiting Bulldogs fell, 35-14, Saturday afternoon in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. With the loss, Butler falls to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Pioneer Football League play. Marist improves to 4-4 (3-2 PFL).
Just as Butler did a week ago, Marist converted the first play from scrimmage into a touchdown as they connected on a 60-yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead. Butler would respond on the next two defensive sequences, as Ethan Brunhofer forced a fumble that Josh Willis recovered on one drive followed by an Isaak Newhouse interception on the next. Unfortunately, Butler was unable to convert the turnovers into points. Marist put together two touchdown later in the first half to take a 21-0 advantage into the locker room.
Butler got on the scoreboard mid-way through the third quarter as Matt Shiltz connected with Pace Temple on a 31-yard completion that ultimately set up a Shiltz one-yard touchdown run. Marist countered with 14 unanswered points before a John Hall two-yard touchdown run capped the scoring.
Marist had 390 total yards compared to 318 for Butler. A majority of the yardage for both teams came through the air. Shiltz had 263 yards passing and Marques Martin-Hayes had seven catches for 88 yards. Temple had a career-high 67 yards receiving for Butler.
Brunhofer and David Starkey were each part of 10 total tackles.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, Nov. 7 with a home game at the Butler Bowl. Valparaiso visits for a 1 p.m. kick-off that is part of Family Weekend on the Butler campus.
