Box Score PROVIDENCE – The Bulldogs picked up their ninth win of the season on Sunday with a 3-1 victory at Providence. Butler scored late in the first half to tie the game and two second half goals would lift the team to victory.
"Providence is a well-organized team with some dangerous players," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said. "To come from behind on the road and score three goals against this side is something that should give us even more confidence as we move forward."
Butler's first goal of the day came off a successful penalty kick attempt from senior Sophia Maccagnone. The game-tying goal came just one minute before the half, sending the teams into the locker room knotted at 1-1.
"Gabrielle's aggressiveness off the dribble earned us the penalty kick late in a half where we didn't have the wind," St. John added. "To be able to come out of that half tied was a real game changer."
Maccagnone came up with the game-winning goal in the opening minutes of the second half. The unassisted score was a shot taken from the top of the box in the 56th minute.
Butler's insurance goal came off the foot of Shannon McDevitt, her first score of the season. McDevitt scored five minutes after Maccagnone on a corner kick. Serina Kashimoto was credited with an assist on the score.
Butler took 12 corner kicks on the day compared to just one from the Friars. BU won the shot total 20-11 and the shots on goal category 10-4.
The victory moves Butler's overall record to 9-4-1 which includes a 2-1 mark against conference foes. Providence falls to 8-5 with a 1-2 conference record.
