Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio – Butler's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament was a memorable one as the Bulldogs battled the Ohio State Buckeyes for 107 minutes before a winner was declared. Sophia Maccagnone scored a goal with one second remaining in the second half to push the teams into overtime, but a late score from OSU in double overtime would advance the Buckeyes to the next round.
Ohio State scored the first goal of the game with less than five minutes remaining in the second half. Back-to-back corner kicks put Madison Card and the rest of the Butler defensive unit under pressure. The second corner attempt allowed Ohio State's Morgan Wolcott to separate the two clubs by scoring her second goal of the season. Nikki Walts got the ball to Wolcott and was credited with an assist on the goal that beat the keeper inside the far post.
Butler picked up their offensive attack with time ticking away on their historic season. Paige Monaghan took a shot on goal (4:18) and then Butler was hit with an offsides penalty with 3:25 to play. Maria Collica got involved in the action, but her shot from the top of the box was blocked with just under three to play. The Bulldogs put the pressure on Ohio State once again with a shot from Jamison Midgley, but her attempt sailed wide right, keeping the 1-0 lead for OSU.
Butler caught a break with just one second left on the scoreboard as an Ohio State foul set up a free kick for the Bulldogs. Maccagnone and Serina Kashimoto each stood behind the ball, Maccagnone from straight-away and Kashimoto off to the side. Maccagnone moved towards the ball and ripped a shot at the keeper. The shot beat Devon Kerr to the right side and Maccagnone would send the game into extra time with her eighth goal of the season.
The first overtime period came and went with each team taking three shots. The Buckeyes fired away first, but Butler recorded the only shot on goal as Monaghan went at Kerr once again early in the period. The Bulldogs took a corner with two minutes left to play, but Shannon McDevitt's shot would be blocked to keep the game knotted at 1-1.
The two evenly matched teams seemed to be lineup up for a shootout as neither club could get things moving in the right direction during the second overtime period. That scenario quickly changed however with Michela Paradiso finding Nikki Walts running down the right side of the field. Walts took the ball deep into BU territory and sent the ball through the heart of the defense where a diving Madison Card couldn't come up with the stop. The cross went from right to left and found Sammy Edwards who finished from eight yards out, giving Ohio State the 2-1 victory.
"We went out playing true to ourselves and the identity of this team," Co-Head Coach Tari St. John said after the match. "Ohio State was a bit better tonight and deserved to advance."
The loss ended a dream season for Butler who recorded a school-record 16 wins on their way to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. The senior class racked up more wins during their four-year stretch on campus than any other class in school history and the 2015 team will always be remembered as the group that won the first BIG EAST Championship in Butler school history. The awesome conference tournament run included wins over Marquette, St. John's and Providence.
"Although we are disappointed with the result, I think it's important to recognize when you have been a part of something very special," St. John added. "This team, these seniors, this was special and I am grateful to have been part of it. The members of this team will be bonded for life. That's what happens when you make history together."
