Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The Butler volleyball team took a 3-0 loss at Creighton on Sunday afternoon 24-26, 14-25, and 18-25. With the win the Bluejays remain on top of the BIG EAST standings while the Bulldogs drop to 7-9 against league foes.
Anna Logan was the player of the game for Butler as the freshman once again notched a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Logan and Briana Lilly led the charge for Butler at the net by combining for 14 blocks. Lilly led the team with eight while Logan added six.
Lilly was also involved in the offensive scheme with seven kills off 15 swings. She ended the game with a .400 attack percentage, the highest on the team. Other Bulldogs to impact the match offensively include Mary Strieldl and Tyler Taylor. Striedl finished the match with six kills and seven digs. Taylor had five kills and three blocks.
The Bluejays used a total team effort to earn the win. Jaali Winters was the top weapon on Sunday with 10 kills and 11 digs, while Kate Elman paced the defense with a match-high 24 digs.
The first set of the afternoon was the most competitive as Butler and Creighton came together tied up at 17-17. Butler went on a 3-0 scoring run that gave them a 20-17 cushion, but the Bluejays would fight back to tie the opener at 22-22. The two teams kept it close as they headed down the stretch tied at 24-24. Jess Bird sent the 'Jays to set point and a block error by Butler would give the home team the 1-0 lead.
Set two went back and forth during the opening stages of action. In a bizarre finish, Creighton used the hot serve from Ashley Jansen to score the final 10 points of the set to take a 2-0 lead.
Set three also featured lopsided scoring runs as the Bluejays jumped out to a 9-2 lead only to see Butler come back to tie the action at 10-10. The difference in the third set was a 7-1 scoring run that opened up a 20-14 lead for the home team. Butler tried to stop the momentum with a timeout and the strategy helped with Creighton committing a service error. In the end, the Bluejays would be too much to overcome as they earned the sweep with a 25-18 win.
