Box Score Butler's 2015 campaign ended with some theatrics in San Diego as the host Toreros were able to stop a two-point conversion attempt in the closing seconds to secure a 28-27 win. Matt Shiltz threw for 388 yards for the Bulldogs, who finish the season at 6-5 and 4-4 in Pioneer Football League play.
After a San Diego touchdown put the hosts up 28-21 midway through the third quarter, Butler responded with a 15-play, 80-yard drive that ended in a Butler fumble recovery for a touchdown. Butler coach
Jeff Voris and his Bulldogs went for the win, but unfortunately for the visitors, the conversion was intercepted. San Diego finishes at 9-2 and 7-1 in PFL play for a share of the league championship.
San Diego jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind a pair of touchdown passes before the Bulldogs responded early in the second with an 85-yard scoring drive. Shiltz hit Guy DiBalsamo on a 7-yard scoring strike that send the game into halftime with a 14-7 San Diego advantage.
On the opening drive of the second half, Shiltz and DiBalsamo switched roles as DiBalsamo found the quarterback for a nine-yard touchdown throw. It was Shiltz's second receiving touchdown of the season. The tie would not last long as San Diego returned the ensuing kick-off.
Once again, Butler would respond with a drive that was capped by a 16-yard touchdown reception by Zack Wolfe. San Diego's go-ahead touchdown would follow for the 28-21 edge. Butler had four drives stall before the touchdown that set up the two-point attempt.
Shiltz's 388 yards through the air were spread across a number of receivers. DiBalsamo had 131 yards, while
Brandon Collins (90) and
Danny Cotter (80) also approached 100 yards. Cotter had a game-high nine catches.
John Hall had 75 yards rushing on just three carries, including a 70-yard sprint.
Sean Horan had seven tackles and an interception for the Bulldogs.
San Diego had 322 yards through the air split between two quarterbacks.
