17/18 South Florida Holds Off @ButlerWBB 87-77

Box Score

TAMPA, Fla. – All five Butler starters finished the game in double figures, but it wouldn't be enough on Wednesday night at the Sun Dome as the nationally-ranked South Florida Bulls walked away with an 87-77 victory.

Sydney Buck scored a career-high 22 points in a losing effort by knocking down eight of her 12 shots. The standout sophomore went 6-for-9 from distance and also chipped in with four rebounds and three assists.

Buck was responsible for half of Butler's 3-point field goals. Blaire Langlois hit four from behind the arc to help her record 12 points and Belle Obert was in the box score with a pair of triples that allowed her to finish the game with 10.

The freshman combination of Brittany Ward and Michelle Weaver were driving forces for the Butler attack. Ward just missed a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds. Weaver ran the point and led the team with six assists. The South Bend native scored a career-high 11 points, five of which came from the charity stripe.

Butler was perfect from the line against South Florida hitting all 11 of their attempts. They shot 42 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3-point range.

Hot shooting allowed Butler to grab the lead after the opening 10 minutes. The flow of the game changed in the second quarter as the Bulls went on to outscore BU during each quarter in the second half.

"We held the lead against them in the second quarter and you could see USF buckle down," Head Coach Kurt Godlevske said after the game. "We have to get that edge and when we do, we'll be very good. I liked how we attacked them early, but we have to get better against teams in the second half."

Senior guard Courtney Williams scored a team-high 29 points for South Florida to lead the Bulls to victory. She ended the game with a double-double by also collecting 10 rebounds.

South Florida scored 18 points off 14 Butler turnovers and also got the ball up the court quickly to record 14 fast break points. Another factor in the final outcome came from the USF reserves that tallied 29 points off the bench.

Butler will now shift their focus to UCF Thanksgiving Classic which runs from Nov. 28-29. The 'Dawgs will play Clemson at noon on the 28th and end the weekend with a 2:30 tip against the host Knights.
