Box Score NEW YORK – Four Butler women's soccer student-athletes earned All-BIG EAST honors on Tuesday afternoon after a vote from the league's head coaches. Sophia Maccagnone and Serina Kashimoto made the All-BIG EAST First Team while Halle Stelbasky and Paige Monaghan represented the Bulldogs on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
After being recognized as a First Team All-BIG EAST selection in 2015, senior Sophia Maccagnone joined elite company in becoming just the second player in Butler women's soccer school history to earn First Team All-Conference honors during all four years of her outstanding career. Maccagnone finished the regular season with 18 points off seven goals and four assists. She is the team leader in shots with 65 and ranks third on the team with 21 shots on goal. Two of Maccagnone's seven goals on the season came off penalty kicks, and four of her seven went down as game-winners.
Maccagnone highlights a senior class that has recorded 45 wins for the 'Dawgs over the past four seasons. With a win tonight against Marquette, Butler would also move into sole possession of second place at Butler for most wins recorded in a single-season. From an individual standpoint, the midfielder from Shelby Township took over the No. 1 spot in the Butler record book with 317 career shots. Her name is also listed fifth in goals (33), third in assists (24) and fourth in points (90).
Kashimoto joins Maccagnone as a First Team All-Conference selection for the second consecutive season. The midfielder from Hiroshima, Japan is a do-it-all player that currently ranks third on the team with 15 points. Kashimoto has five goals on the year and is tied for the team lead in assists with five. A starter in all 20 games, Kashimoto has taken 53 shots on the year, 19 of which were shots on goal. She has lifted the team to victory on three different occasions, including in back-to-back matches where her game-winning goal was the only score of the contest to help BU defeat Georgetown and Seton Hall.
Maccagnone and Kashimoto have been two of the top players in the BIG EAST since Butler joined the conference back in 2013. The future of the Butler women's soccer program is equally as bright as the Bulldogs placed two forwards on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in Monaghan and Stelbasky.
Stelbasky ended the regular season with a team-high 21 points after scoring nine goals and adding three assists. She was second on the team with 57 total shots, but held the team lead in shots on goal with 30. The Strongsville, Ohio played in all 20 games, earning 18 starts. She immediately impacted the team by scoring her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate game at Cleveland State. She went on to dominate non-conference opponents by scoring a goal in five-straight matches from Sept. 3-13.
Joining Stelbasky on the BIG EAST All-Freshman team is newcomer Paige Monaghan, a forward from Succasunna, New Jersey. Monaghan finished the regular season ranked fourth on the team with nine points. She came up with three goals and added three assists to help the powerful Butler attack rack up 13 team wins. Monaghan took 56 shots during the regular season, 24 of which were on goal. She scored two of her three goals on the year in the home opener vs. Eastern Michigan and added her third at home vs. IPFW.
