Box Score Butler utilized 64-percent shooting to run past Southern Utah, 88-52, Tuesday night (Dec. 22) at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Roosevelt Jones posted his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs followed up their impressive Saturday win over Purdue with another triumph to move to 10-1 on the season. Southern Utah falls to 2-8.
Tyler Wideman made all seven of his attempts from the field to lead the Bulldogs with 15 points.
Kelan Martin (12) and
Andrew Chrabascz (11) also joined Wideman and Jones in double figures as 11 of Butler's 12 players who saw action also scored.
Tyler Lewis distributed a game-high eight assists to go along with his nine points. Butler had a stretch of making 17 of 20 attempts from the field from 11:54 to play in the first half to 16:57 remaining in the game.
"Moving the ball has been a trademark of this team all season, and I thought we did that really well tonight," said Butler coach
Chris Holtmann of the team's 21 assists. "We need to come back from a few days off for the holidays ready to go with a good challenge waiting for us on the 28
th (the game against IUPUI)."
Butler scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed in the contest. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 48-28 at the half and got up by 41 in the closing minutes. Butler had a 37-25 rebounding edge and forced the Thunderbirds into 36-percent shooting and 15 turnovers.
Travon Langston led Southern Utah with 17 points.
The Bulldogs continue their three-game homestand with a Monday (Dec. 28) contest against IUPUI. The tip is set for 7 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse with tickets still available. Butler opens BIG EAST play on New Year's Eve, hosting #10 Providence.
