Ball State Defeats @ButlerWBB 58-50

Box Score

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ball State outscored Butler 26-13 in the fourth quarter to record a 58-50 win at Worthen Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs rode the hot-hand of Blaire Langlois who scored a season-high 25 points against the Cardinals, but it wouldn't be enough to win on the road as Butler moved to 4-4 on the year.

Moriah Monaco scored 10 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Ball State win. Before Monaco started to knock down shots, it was a game within a game between Langlois and Ball State's Nathalie Fontaine who led the Cardinals with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The third Cardinal to score in double figures was shooting guard Jill Morrison who ended the contest with 11 points and six rebounds.

Langlois was undoubtedly the first option for BU on Sunday as the senior stepped up to knock down 8 of her 21 shots from the field. Seven of her eight makes were from 3-point range. Langlois did more than score as she also provided Butler with eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

Belle Obert and Sydney Buck each scored six points for BU while Brittany Ward and Michelle Weaver were each in the box score with five.

Tori Schickel was limited to just 18 minutes of action after taking a shot to the face in the final minutes of the third quarter. The freshman forward was unable to return to the game.

Second chance points would once again be a factor in the final outcome as Ball State won the category 19-6. BSU also grabbed 19 offensive rebounds to win the battle on the glass 51-39.

The start of today's game was quite similar to the opening minutes at Wright State with Blaire Langlois knocking down multiple 3-point field goals to give BU the early advantage. A layup from Schickel after three-straight Langlois 3-pointers gave Butler an 11-4 edge, but Ball State would chip away to trim the lead to four after 10 minutes.

Each squad poured in nine points in the second quarter which gave Butler a 25-21 lead at the break and the Bulldogs would shake off a slow start to the third to hold a five-point lead heading into the fourth.

The Cardinals scored the first five points of the final quarter to pull even with Butler. The score would bounce back and forth until an old fashioned three-point play from Fontaine would give BSU a four-point lead at 44-40.

Langlois chipped away with a pair of free throws, but Monaco would score on back-to-back trips to move the Cardinal lead back up to six. Langlois drilled a 3-pointer to get BU back within one possession, but Monaco answered with a triple of her own on the next possession.

Ward came up with a layup with less than two minutes to play to keep Butler within range, but a straight-away 3-pointer from Carmen Grande pushed the deficit back to seven. Grande celebrated the bucket because it was the only one of the game for the point guard (1-9). She did contribute with nine rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Langlois' seventh and final 3-pointer of the game would get Butler within four points, but the Cardinals would make free throws down the stretch to hold on to the win. The Cardinals are now 5-2 on the year.

Butler will return to Hinkle Fieldhouse next week with a pair of home games. The Bulldogs will host Green Bay at 7 PM on Dec. 9 and end the weekend with a 2 PM tip vs. Arkansas on Dec. 13.
