Box Score 2 MALIBU, Calif. – Butler's late push in the final two innings of the game came up short on Friday night as the Pepperdine Waves recorded a 6-3 victory at Eddy D. Field Stadium. Drew Small led the team from the top of the order with a 2-for-5 day from the plate.
Small scored a run and recorded an RBI against the Waves, but the deficit was just too much to overcome as Pepperdine grabbed a 6-0 lead after the sixth inning. The scoring opened up in the bottom of the fifth inning with Manny Jefferson and Hutton Moyer each hitting solo home runs.
Jeff Schank would get through the inning, but would be replaced in the bottom of the sixth as Pepperdine was able to increase their lead after a two-out grand slam from Moyer. Bobby Napoleon entered the game for Schank to start the inning and quickly loaded the bases. A sac bunt and pop up would give BU a fighter's chance, but the talented Moyer sent a ball into deep left field to put the game out of reach.
Butler got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth off a passed ball. The second run came home after an RBI groundout from Chris Maranto. Rounding out the run total was Gehrig Parker who walked to get on base, stole second, then scored on the double from Small.
Schank was hit with the loss while Jackson McClelland earned the win. Schank is now 0-2 on the year after tossing five innings against the Waves, resulting in just five hits and two earned runs. He walked four but struck out four before leaving the hill. Other Bulldogs to get innings in on Friday were Bobby Napoleon and Tyler Rathjen. Napoleon was hit with the grand slam, but Rathjen finished the game strong allowing only two hits in the final 2.1 innings of action.
These two teams will take the diamond on Saturday at 4 p.m. for game two of the series.
