Box Score 2 ROSEMONT, ILL. -- Butler picked up its first win of 2015 and earned a split on the day with a 3-2 decision over co-host UIC at the Total Control Sports Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 7. The Bulldogs were beaten by Western Illinois, 8-4, earlier in the day at the indoor tournament being played at the Dome at Rosemont.
Junior Alex Kotter continued her hot start to the season with six hits and four runs batted in on the day. She went three for four with three RBI's against Western Illinois and then had three hits, two runs scored and a single RBI against UIC. She also had three hits in her first game in the tournament on Friday.
Senior Kristen Boros drove in Kotter with the game-winner in the fifth inning against UIC. Kotter had opened the frame with a single, advanced to second on a walk to Chelsea Norwood and reached third on a single by Alyssa Lach. Boros then singled through the left side for the decisive run.
Sophomore left-hander Kristin Gutierrez, who entered the game in the fourth inning, blanked the Flames over the final three innings to pick up the win.
Butler had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Kotter and a run-scoring double by Norwood. UIC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs off of Butler starter Kacey Starwalt.
Earlier in the day, Western Illinois jumped to a 5-1 lead after three innings and then held off Butler for the win.
Kotter was one of four Bulldogs who recorded multiple hits in the game. Sarah Dixon, Brandyce Sallee and Sarah Gronowski each had two hits in the contest, and Butler finished with 13 total hits.
Freshman pitcher Mikeila Boroff, getting her first collegiate start, took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Butler (1-2) will wrap up play in its season-opening tournament with a single game against Samford on Sunday (Feb. 8). That game is scheduled for 10 a.m. (ET).
