Butler Falls to Marquette in Double Overtime

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – 40 minutes of action was not enough on Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs and Golden Eagles entered double overtime to declare a winner. Marquette outscored Butler 13-10 in the final five minutes of the contest to earn the 77-74 win.

Ijeoma Uchendu notched a double-double with 27 points and 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Marquette came up with their second conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Arlesia Morse and Kenisha Bell were the top performers for Marquette. Morse finished the day with a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and a steal. Bell went in the box score with 17 points and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs made a late push near the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. A 5-0 scoring run knotted the score at 51-51 and a 3-point field goal from Blaire Langlois on the next possession would give Butler a one-point edge. Bell hit a free throw for Marquette to tie the game with 3:41 left in the second half and each team would add one more field goal before the buzzer.

Neither team was able to score in the final minute of the second half. Morse took a contested 3-point field goal with nine seconds left and Butler grabbed the miss to control the final possession. After a timeout, Langlois brought the ball down the middle of the court and launched a long distance 3-point field goal that just rimmed out deep sending the game to overtime.

Marquette was clutch from the charity stripe in the first overtime period, connecting on five three throw attempts to net five of their eight points from the line. Their only made field goal was a triple from Tia Elbert with 1:38 to play. Butler got scores from Lexus Murry and Uchendu who teamed up for Butler's eight points.

A foul from Lexus Murry sent Morse to the free throw line in overtime with the game tied at 62-62. Morse hit each attempt, but the game would be extended once again with Murry finding Uchendu for a late bucket.

The second overtime period was highlighted by yet another 3-point field goal from Elbert as the Golden Eagles scored 13 points over the final five minutes of action to get the win. The 'Dawgs cut the deficit to one point after a layup from Murry, but five-straight free throws from Marquette would eventually lead the team to victory. Morse hit the first two, Chelsie Butler was at the line to push the lead to five and Apiew Ojulu split a pair to get Marquette to 77 points. Butler never quit as Sydney Buck hit a triple at the buzzer, but the deficit was too much to overcome, giving Marquette the upset victory.

Butler got off to a great start by earning a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game, but outside shooting would soon become a problem for the home team. Butler shot 3-for-21 from 3-point range (14%) and wasn't much better from the free throw line (9-for-17). 50 of Butler's 74 points on Sunday were scored in the paint as the team was forced to attack the basket due to shooting woes.

Butler finished with three players in double figures. Goodwin scored 13 points before fouling out of the contest and Obert was in the book with 11. Goodwin added six rebounds, five assists and two steals in 31 minutes.  The redshirt-sophomore from Texas shared the team lead in assists with Lexus Murry who came off the bench for eight points, three rebounds and five assists.

The tough loss was an exciting game that featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes. Butler's largest lead of seven points came before the first media timeout. Marquette's biggest lead was only six points as the two teams went blow-for-blow for all 50 minutes.

Butler will return to action with a pair of road games next weekend at Villanova and Georgetown. The Wildcats will host Butler on Friday with the Hoyas set to play Butler on Sunday.
