Bulldogs Sweep Two Games In Illinois

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROSEMONT, ILL. -- Butler, playing a quickly scheduled doubleheader in Rosemont, Ill., picked up a pair of one-run wins on Sunday (March 1), including a dramatic come-from-behind win in the opener.  The Bulldogs defeated Indiana State, 5-4, in the first game and then completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory over Northern Illinois in the second.

Head coach Scott Hall was originally scheduled to take his team to Kentucky to participate in the Western Kentucky Invitational.  But plans changed when snow in the midwest forced the cancellation of the tournament.  In place of the weekend tournament, Hall was able to schedule a pair of indoor games at The Dome in Rosemont.

Sophomore Chelsea Norwood sparked the Bulldogs past Indiana State with a grand slam to cap a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning in the first game.  The Sycamores scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to grab a 4-0 lead and held that margin through five innings behind the no-hit pitching of junior Taylor Lockwood.

The Bulldogs (6-7) finally mounted a rally in the sixth inning.  Audry Hiner was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning, and then with one out, Sarah Gronowski reached on an error.  Brandyce Sallee walked to load the bases, and Kristen Boros followed with a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in the first Butler run.

Alex Kotter then walked to load the bases again, and Norwood put the Bulldogs in front with a two-out drive over the leftfield fence, her second home run of the season.  Norwood's game-winner was Butler's lone hit in the game.

Junior Kristin Gutierrez came on in relief of freshman Mikeila Boroff in the top of the seventh inning, and the Butler left-hander struck out the final two batters she faced with the tying run on third base.  Boroff, who pitched five shutout innings picked up the win, while Gutierrez earned the save.

Butler jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second game with single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings.  Sallee led off the game with a home run to center field, and she drove in the Bulldogs' second run with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning.  Riley Carter drove in the final Butler run with a single down the leftfield line.

Northern Illinois, blanked by Gutierrez through the first five innings, mounted a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Huskies scored a pair of runs on three hits and a sacrifice fly, before Gutierrez retired two straight batters to end the threat.  The Butler junior then set the Huskies down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up the complete-game win.

Senior Maria Leichty led the Butler offense with a pair of hits in three trips to the plate.

Butler will take a week off before returning to action at Ball State on March 9.
