Box Score 2 ORLANDO, FLA. -- Butler scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to earn a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Monmouth and complete a sweep of its first two games in the UCF Spring Fling Tournament in Forida on Friday (March 13). The Bulldogs won their first game in the tournament, 5-0, over UIC.
Butler (9-8) rallied from a 5-0 deficit against Monmouth with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Brandyce Sallee and Kristen Boros each had a two-run double in the inning and Krosley Ogden drove in the other run with a single. That rally left the game tied at 5-5 through seven innings.
The teams went to the international tiebreaker in the eighth inning, and Butler immediately capitalized. Sarah Gronowski started the inning on second base and Sallee was hit by a pitch. Boros set down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and Alex Kotter followed with a walk to load the bases.
A wild pitch then plated Gronowski and advanced the other runners. Chelsea Norwood that added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Sallee.
Kacey Starwalt, who replaced Boros in the circle in the sixth inning, set down Monmouth in order in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn the victory.
Audrey Hiner went three for four with one run scored to pace Butler's 10-hit attack.
Earlier in the day, junior Kristin Gutierrez went the distance in the circle to earn a shutout victory over UIC. The Butler left-hander had seven strikeouts and no walks, while allowing just six hits in the complete-game effort.
Butler jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third inning a two-run double by Norwood. The Bulldogs then added three more runs in the seventh inning on a three-run double by Kotter.
Ogden led the Bulldogs with three hits in three trips to the plate, while Sallee and Norwood each had a pair of hits.
The Bulldogs will continue play in the Spring Fling Tournament with games against James Madison and host UCF on Saturday.
