Box Score 2 OMAHA, NEB. -- Sophomore Kristin Gutierrez provided the arm and senior Kristen Boros added the bat, and the two helped lead Butler to a 4-1 victory over Creighton in the first BIG EAST contest for both teams on Saturday (March 21). The host Bluejays rebounded with a 7-4 win in the second game on the league doubleheader.
Gutierrez limited the Bluejays to a single unearned run on five hits, while recording her sixth complete game of the season. She had five strikeouts and just two walks and improved to 6-5 on the young season.
Boros drove in three of Butler's four runs with a single, triple and home run in four trips to the plate.
The Bulldogs fell behind, 1-0, in the first inning, but bounced back to take the lead for good in the third frame. Audrey Hiner opened the inning with a single and scored on a double by Sarah Gronowski. Boros then drove in the go-ahead run with a triple.
Boros added a soio home run in the fifth inning and a run-scoring single in the seventh.
The Bulldogs (13-11) jumped in front in the first inning of the nightcap on a solo home run by Boros. It was her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
But the Bluejays (14-5) scored two runs in the bottom of the first and added single runs in the second and third to take the lead for good. Butler's Brandyce Sallee slugged a two-run home run in the sixth inning, but Creighton answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Boros and Alex Kotter each had a pair of hits to pace the Butler attack.
The two BIG EAST foes will wrap up their three-game series with a single game on Sunday, March 22, starting at noon (ET).
