Box Score 2 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Butler baseball team is now 11-14 overall after sweeping a Saturday doubleheader at Purdue. The Bulldogs took game one by the final score of 4-0 and dominated the action in game two 13-1.
Game one was a pitching duel between the two state-rivals as the teams went into the ninth inning deadlocked at 0-0. Chris Marras would step to the plate with the bases loaded and just one out to deliver a three RBI double down the leftfield line that allowed Austin Miller, Drew Small and Tyler Houston to run home.
The Bulldogs would extend the lead to 4-0 after a two-out Quincy Quintero single that found room through the left side of the infield. Pinch runner Brodie Meyer added the insurance run as Butler came up clutch with four runs off three hits in the top half of the ninth.
Purdue would go quietly in the bottom of the ninth as the back half of the order would fly out, ground out and finally strike out to end the game.
Jeff Schank and Luke Johnson were great on the mound for BU as the duo shutout the Boilermakers. Schank tossed the first six innings, limiting PU to just three hits. The lefty struck out seven and walked three.
Johnson took the hill for the final three innings and like Schank, he limited the Boilers to just three hits. Johnson walked one and struck out one to earn his second win of the season.
Game two of the scheduled doubleheader started off slow, but four Butler runs in the fourth followed by eight runs in the sixth blew the game wide open as Butler went on to win 13-1.
Neither team was able to push a run across in the opening three innings, but that all changed in the fourth as BU opened up a 4-0 lead. Butler got an RBI single from Quintero to open up the scoring and a pair of Purdue errors helped the Bulldogs get out to the four run advantage.
Garrett Christman reached first base on a muffed throw which allowed Michael Fries to score and a two RBI single from Cole Malloy put BU in the driver's seat.
The Bulldogs added a single run in the top of the fifth after yet another RBI single from Quintero, but a majority of the damage came in the sixth with Butler scoring eight runs off seven hits to put the game out of reach. Miller, Houston, Quintero, Christman and Amador all recorded RBIs in the half inning to give Butler the decisive edge.
Purdue avoided the shutout by scoring a single run in the bottom half of the inning, but once again it was an outstanding pitching display by Butler to pick up the W.
Purdue was only able to record four hits against Butler in the nightcap as the Bulldogs used four arms in the lopsided victory. Nyznyk got the start and the win for BU after going six full innings with four strikeouts and four walks. Nyznyk limited PU to just three hits and one earned run before leaving the hill. Josh Goldberg, Kyle Allen and Bobby Napoleon finished off the Boilermakers as they all came in to pitch one full inning.
Quintero was able to single handedly match Purdue's offensive output as the designated hitter went 4-for-5 from the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored. Christman and Malloy each had two RBIs and Tyler Houston lit up the Boilers with a 3-for-6 day that included two RBIs and three runs scored.
These two teams will come together again tomorrow as the Bulldogs host the Boilermakers at Bulldog Park for a 1 p.m. start in the third and final game of the series.
