Box Score INDIANAPOLIS – Just hours after sweeping a Saturday doubleheader at Alexander Field, the Bulldogs returned to the diamond this time to host Purdue as the two teams came together for game three of the weekend series. Butler scored five runs through the opening three innings to grab a lead, and the advantage would hold true for the remainder of the game as they ended the day with a 5-3 victory.
Tyler Houston and Mike Kseniak each recorded a multi-hit game against PU to rack up four of Butler's 10 hits on the day. The top of the order was highly important to the win with Houston going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Drew Small had one hit and an RBI as the lead-off man and second baseman Austin Miller continued to help Butler at the bottom of the order by going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Purdue scored first with a single run in the top of the first, but the Bulldogs would quickly respond with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning. Houston recorded a one out triple to right field and after a walked batter, Fries would step to the plate to deliver a deep fly ball to center that allowed Houston to tag up.
Butler's first lead of the game would follow in the bottom of the second as BU scored three runs off two hits. The Bulldogs put runners on base after a lead-off walk and Miller being hit by a pitch. Small would come around in the order to record an RBI single that scored Chris Marras and Houston would send a run home with a hard ground ball to the left side of the infield.
The third run of the inning was unearned as Fries singled to right that allowed Houston to give Butler the 4-1 edge.
Butler's offense would add another run in the third after an RBI single from Miller. Marras scored on the play and Mike Kseniak advanced to third, but the Boilers were able to record their second out with Miller being thrown out at second trying to extend his single into a double.
Purdue made a pitching change after the play and got an unassisted groundout to first base to get out of the inning.
Purdue got two runs back in the top of the sixth after a two RBI double from Kyle Wood that scored Snidanko and Johnson. The Boilers made some more noise by loading the bases in the seventh, but Josh Goldberg got the Bulldogs out of harm's way with an inning ending strikeout.
Butler didn't score after the third inning, but the early damage was enough as they got to the finish line with a 5-3 win. Great pitching was a staple of the weekend for Butler as Nick Morton earned the win on the mound vs. PU. Morton tossed six full innings and struck out four. The lefty handed the ball off to Goldberg with two on and no outs in the sixth, but it wouldn't' be a problem as Goldberg limited the Boilermakers to just one hit over his three innings of action.
With the win, Butler is now on a nine-game winning streak as they head into next week with a matchup against Indiana State on March 31. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
