Butler Rallies For Extra Inning Win

Box Score

MUNCIE, IND. -- Sophomore Brandyce Sallee turned in a career-best hitting performance and then scored the game-winning run to lift Butler to a 6-4 extra-inning victory over Ball State in a non-conference road game on Tuesday, April 14.  The win boosted the Bulldogs to 17-22 on the season.

Sallee, who has hit safely in six of Butler's last seven games, had a career-high four hits, including a double, in six trips to the plate, and she scored a pair of runs.  Her second run in the top of the 11th inning proved to be the game-winner.

Four other Butler players turned in multiple-hit performances, helping the Bulldogs to 14 total hits in the win.

Tied at 4-4, Sallee led off the 11th inning with a bunt single.  Alyssa Lach followed with a double to right-center field to give the Bulldogs two runners in scoring position.  Chelsea Norwood then plated Sallee with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Lach scored an insurance run on a single by Maria Leichty.

Junior Kristin Gutierrez, who came on in relief of Butler starter Mikeila Boroff in the bottom of the eighth inning, retired Ball State in order in the bottom of the 11th to pick up her ninth win of the season.

Ball State (21-20) jumped to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.  The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the third inning on a double by Sallee, a run-scoring single by Lach, a ground out by Norwood and a run-scoring, infield single by Leichty.

The Cardinals went back on top with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and needed just one out to secure the win in the seventh.  But junior Riley Carter rescued the Bulldogs with a two-out, two-run home run over the center field wall.  It was her fourth home run of the season.

Boroff pitched the first seven innings for the Bulldogs and allowed three earned runs on ten hits.  Gutierrez blanked Ball State on two hits over the final four frames.  She recorded four strikeouts and gave up just one walk.

Carter, Lach, Leichty and senior Kristen Boros each had two hits for Butler.

The Bulldogs will begin a four-game homestand with a non-conference game against Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m., on Wednesday.  Butler will return to BIG EAST play with a three-game series at home against Georgetown on Saturday and Sunday, April 18-19.
