Box Score MUNCIE, Ind. – Butler took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning and senior Kyle Allen looked to be well on his way to his second save of the season, but two costly errors with two outs in the inning would allow Ball State to record the comeback win.
Butler and Ball State were deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the final inning of the ballgame. The Bulldogs would strike first with an RBI single from Ryan Wojciechowski , but the lone run wouldn't be enough as Ball State pushed two runs across home plate in the bottom half.
Drew Small singled to lead off the inning for Butler and he advanced to second base after a sac bunt from Garrett Christman. Tyler Houston was batting in the three-hole today and he joined Small on base by drawing a walk, putting two runners on with just one out.
Butler played aggressive with the game on the line and it ended up hurting them in the end as Small was caught stealing at third base giving the Cardinals their second out. Houston moved up on the play and would come around to score on the Wojo single to center, but that costly out would only give Butler a one-run lead moving into the home stretch.
Despite the setback, Butler still put themselves in a good position heading into the bottom half of the inning with a one-run lead in the low scoring contest. Allen took the hill for BU in the ninth and immediately struck out the first batter he faced.
Butler would quickly move to two outs in the inning with a fly out to leftfield, but the Cardinals never gave up which fueled the late rally.
It seemed as if Allen would get Ball State to go quietly with a 1-2-3 inning, but an error by the second baseman gave the Cards a fighter's chance. Jarret James would pinch run for BSU and Zach Plesac would approach home plate to pinch hit.
Plesac singled to right during his at-bat which allowed Jarrett to move to third base. With the game on the line, Butler made another costly error that could have put the game away as Matt Eppers reached first on an error by the BU third baseman. James scored on the play to tie the game and the very next batter would come up with the walk-off hit as Ryan Spauling delivered a single through the left side of the infield that scored Plesac.
Runs were hard to come by in the Wednesday tilt with each team going scoreless through the first three innings. BSU got on the board first with a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth, an effort that would be matched in the fifth by Wojciechowski.
Wojo had each BU RBI in the game while going 2-for-4 from the plate. Joining him with two hits were teammates Small, Christman, and Houston at the top of the order. The top performance from the plate from Butler was recorded by senior Michael Fries who went 3-for-3 with a walk.
Connor Mitchell got the start for Butler, and Kyle Allen had to wear the loss despite not giving up an earned run. The 'Dawgs used a committee today that include Luke Johnson, Josh Goldberg, Bobby Napoleon and Danny Pobereyko.
Ball State used four arms on the day with Mitch Gibson getting the start and Brendan Burns getting the win.
The Bulldogs will now shift their focus to the weekend with a three-game road series coming up against the Seton Hall Pirates. The first game will be on Friday, April 17 with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
