Box Score 2 OXFORD, OHIO -- Senior Kristen Boros, pressed into duty in the pitcher's circle, turned in her first career complete game and helped Butler to a 2-1 victory and a split in a doubleheader at Miami, Ohio, on Tuesday (April 21). The host RedHawks captured the first game of the twinbill, 5-3.
Boros, normally a starting infielder for the Bulldogs, was given her second pitching start of the season in the nightcap at Miami. She responded by limiting the RedHawks to one run on just two hits over seven innings of work. She struck out two and walked none, while picking up her first win of the season.
The strong pitching performance kept Butler in a position to win the game, and the Bulldogs did just that in the top of the seventh inning. With the scored tied at 1-1, Cassie Rupel led off with a walk. Katelyn Cahill came in to pinch run, and she advanced to second on a passed ball and to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sarah Dixon.
An infield single by Boros and an intentional walk to Brandyce Sallee loaded the bases for freshman Alyssa Lach. The first-year Butler infielder delivered with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Cahill with the game-winner.
Boros then retired two Miami hitters in the bottom of the seventh, before the Redhawks came up with an infield single for just their second hit of the game. It wasn't enough as Boros retired the final batter she faced to secure the win.
Butler took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a solo home run by Sallee. It was her fifth home run of the season. Miami tied the game in the fifth inning on a home run by Bree Lipscomb.
Boros and Chelsea Norwood each had a pair of hits to pace Butler's offense in the win.
Miami (25-20) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opener and then held off a late rally by the Bulldogs to record the win. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and had the tying run at the plate when the final out was made.
Boros had two hits and two RBIs in the game, while Dixon added a pair of hits. The Bulldogs (22-23) had ten hits in the contest, but stranded eight runners. The loss snapped Butler's six-game winning streak.
Butler will return to BIG EAST play and close out its home season with a three-game series against Seton Hall, beginning on Saturday, April 25. The first game of the Saturday doubleheader at the Butler Softball Field is scheduled for noon.
