INDIANAPOLIS – The Butler men's tennis team ended the 2015 season with a 4-1 loss to Xavier in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships. The Bulldogs earned the doubles point, but Xavier controlled singles action for the win.
The day started well for Butler with the Bulldogs recording wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Facing an 8-3 loss at No. 1 doubles, Butler had to run the table to earn the point. The brother tandem of Alex and Austin Woldmoe kept the Bulldogs alive with an 8-6 win at No. 2 while the No. 3 team of Tommy Marx and Sam O'Neill sealed the point with a tight 8-7 (7-2) victory.
The first point of the day would be the last for the Bulldogs as Xavier dominated the top of the lineup in singles play on Friday afternoon. Zach Muek defeated Brandon Woods 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 to tie the match and a 6-2, 6-2 loss from Sam O'Neill at No. 2 put the Musketeers in front 2-1.
The third singles match to come to an end was at No. 3 where Matt Bishop defeated Austin Woldmoe 7-5, 6-3 and the nail in the coffin came at No. 5 where Gabe Araujo knocked off Pulok Bhattacharya 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
Butler ended the 2015 season with a 7-15 overall record. The team will return Brandon Woods and Alex Woldmoe, but head coach Parker Ross will have to replace a talented senior group in Pulok Bhattacharya, Tommy Marx, Sam O'Neill, Bill Weldon and Austin Woldmoe.
