Butler Splits Sunday Doubleheader vs. Creighton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

INDIANAPOLIS – Great pitching and team defense was on full display Sunday with Butler hosting Creighton in a conference doubleheader at Bulldog Park. The Bulldogs earned a 2-1 win in game one, but the Bluejays would win the series with a 1-0 victory in game two.

Butler and Creighton played a seven-inning game in the opener due to the two teams coming together on a getaway day. The bullpen wasn't a factor for either side as Peter Nyznyk and Keith Rogalla each went the distance in the shortened matchup.

Butler faced a 1-0 deficit after a single Bluejay run in the first, but the team came back to tie the contest with a run in the fourth. The game-winning run would cross home plate in the fifth and Nyznyk would get BU to the finish line for the 2-1 victory.

Nyznyk allowed six hits and one earned run in the complete game showing. He struck out four and only walked two. Creighton's starter put up similar numbers as Rogalla allowed four hits, resulting in two earned runs for the Bluejays. He ended the game with five strikeouts and just one out.

Brett Murray recorded two of Crieghton's six hits on the day while Tyler Houston matched his effort for BU. Houston went 2-for-3 in game one with an RBI and a run scored.

Houston scored the first run of the game for Butler in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI single from Quincy Quintero. He increased his chances for being named player of the game with an RBI single in the fifth that gave BU the 2-1 win.

Austin Miller came around to score the game-winning run in the fifth. The second baseman doubled down the line with one out in the inning and quickly moved to third off a Drew Small groundout. His game-winning run would come easily with Houston driving his single into the grass in centerfield.

The first game of the afternoon went out with a bang as CU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh. Nyznyk walked the lead-off man, but was able to avoid further trouble by retiring the next two batters. With two outs, Nyznyk lost his control and hit David Wiedman to put two on with two out and a walk would load the bases for Nicky Lopez.

Lopez drove a ball to deep right field, but Nick Bartolone was able to track the ball and make the play with a foot in the warning track. Head Coach Steve Farley had moved Bartolone into the lineup at the start of the inning to improve the defensive lineup.

Game two was much like game one with each pitcher working deep into the contest. Nick Morton was terrific for Butler, but ultimately was hit with the loss, moving him to 3-5 on the year. Morton tossed eight full innings and kept the Bluejays off balance with just five hits that resulted in one earned run. He struck out four and walked three before leaving the hill.

Morton's counterpart was right-handed pitcher Matt Warren who picked up the win after six full innings of action. Warren racked up his fourth win of the year while the sidearm thrower David Gerber posted his seventh save of the season out of the bullpen.

The only run of the game was scored in the top of the third inning after a triple from Daniel Woodrow. The timely hit scored Kevin Lamb which would hold as the game-winning run of the game.

The game, which was broadcasted live on the BIG EAST Digital Network, only lasted two hours and seven minutes as each pitcher moved quickly through the lineups. The final box score showed six hits for each team with Creighton also making one fielding error.

With the split Butler moves to 16-26 on the year with a 3-6 record against BIG EAST opponents. The Bluejays stay on top of the BIG EAST standings with a 24-12 record that includes an 8-3 record against conference foes.
