Butler Takes Game Two 4-1

Box Score

INDIANAPOLIS – Butler moved in front of Villanova in the BIG EAST standings on Saturday afternoon with a 4-1 win over the Wildcats. Peter Nyznyk tossed 7.1 innings of action to earn the win and Danny Pobereyko came in to record his second save of the series to push the Bulldogs overall record to 18-26.

Nyznyk has been on a roll since taking over Saturday starts in the weekend rotation. The senior lefty gave up one earned run in the top of the first inning off a double down the right field line, but would come out ahead to earn his fourth win of the season. Nyznyk limited the Wildcats to just six hits during his outing allowing BU to post the win.

Pobereyko was the only other Bulldog to take the mound as the hard throwing righty shutout the 'Cats to grab his third save of the season.

Butler scored two runs in the bottom of the first, a single run in the fifth and one more in the seventh to defeat Villanova. Tyler Houston was 1-for-2 with three runs scored, while Ryan Wojciechowski and Quincy Quintero each added two hits. The top performance from the plate belonged to Fries who ended the day 3-for-4 from the dish.

Chris Marras countered Max Beerman's two out double in the first by delivering a two RBI single through the left side of the infield to score Austin Miller and Houston. The lead would move to 3-1 in the fifth with Houston scoring off a wild pitch and the final run of the game would once again be scored by Houston as he came home off the Wojciechowski single to center.

Butler seemed to have the game well in hand, but a shaky top of the eighth gave the Wildcats life. A lead-off walk to Emmanuel Morris gave the 'Cats a baserunner and a one-out single up the middle would signal the end of the day for Nyznyk as Lowe reached on the base knock.

With two on and one out Danny Pobereyko took the mound in search for the save. Pobereyko walked the first batter he faced to load the bases and that brought the BIG EAST home run leader to the plate in Max Beerman. Beerman's double down the line in the first was Villanova's only run as the slugger looked to add to his RBI total with the game on the line.

Beerman waited for his pitch and smoked a ball down the first base line once again, but the outcome in the eighth was much different than the first as Michael Fries jumped up to make the catch and dove to the base to turn the double play. Fries had just moved to first base after the defensive change that sent Nick Bartolone into right. The double play gave BU all the momentum going into the home stretch allowing the Bulldogs to record the win.

The Bulldogs will come into tomorrow's contest looking for the series sweep. The all-important matchup doubles as senior day for Kyle Allen, Austin Miller, Michael Fries, Peter Nyznyk and Will Amador. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
