Box Score 2 LARAMIE, WY – Butler was unable to pull off the upset on Saturday morning as the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes came up with a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs at the UniWyo Sports Complex (25-15, 26-24, 25-18). Butler is now 1-1 over opening weekend with one match left against host school Wyoming. Action begins at 9 p.m. later tonight.
"We were very error prone this morning," Head Coach Sharon Clark explained. "13 service errors make it so hard to establish momentum. We will learn from it and hopefully have a short memory."
Ohio State used a balanced attack to take control of the match on Saturday as four different student-athletes posted nine kills or more. Elizabeth Campbell paced the group with 11 while the trio of Audra Appold, Taylor Sandbothe and Tyler Richardson each added nine.
Butler once again got a solid game out of freshman Anna Logan who posted six kills and five digs against the Buckeyes. Senior Mary Striedl came up with seven kills to lead the team and Makayla Ferguson flirted with a triple-double performance by adding five kills, 17 assists and seven digs.
"We had a good performance from Mary offensively, but in the end we just couldn't stop their attack from the middle," Clark stated.
Butler hit .169 as a team compared to .308 for the Buckeyes. While the first set was a bit lopsided, Butler regrouped to give OSU a scare in set two. The Bulldogs were within striking distance in the second game as they faced a 21-18 deficit. A service ace from Whitney Beck followed later by a service error from the Buckeyes moved the score to 22-20 and yet another service ace, this time from Ferguson, put Butler within one point at 22-21.
Ohio State used a timeout and came out of the break with a kill from Campbell off the assist from Emily Ruetter. The Buckeyes then used a kill from Richardson to get to set point, forcing BU into calling a timeout.
The Bulldogs never quit as two straight points out of the stoppage would knot the score at 24-24. Striedl came up with the first kill off a pass from Ferguson and a kill from Jessica Klingensmith would keep BU alive late in the contest.
A BU service error after the Klingensmith moved the momentum back over to the Buckeyes and the rally would come up just short with Sandbothe registering the kill for the set winner.
The third and final set would be tight early, but an OSU scoring run would give the Buckeyes a five-point cushion halfway through the action. Butler would call a timeout when facing a 20-14 deficit, but they were unable to avoid the sweep as No. 14 Ohio State improved to 1-1 on the year after losing a four-set match to Wyoming last night.
